The ABI remained slightly above 50 (neutral) in December 2018 at 50.4 points. Most of the regions and sectors remained above 50, with the Midwest region and Institutional sector in the lead.
In January 2019, the Housing Market Index (HMI) was at 58 with increased performance in the current, future and traffic components of the index.
Construction Update
The annualized value of Construction Put-in-Place was $1.3T in November 2018, 3.4% above its year-ago activity.
The Construction Cost Index (CCI) and Building Cost Index (BCI) in February 2019 shows increases in current pricing with an annual growth of 3.0% each.
Economic Update
In January 2019, the unemployment rate increased to 4.0% after adding 304K jobs, with 52K added in the Construction Industry.
Out of the large MSAs (1M+ population), 33 of 51 showed year-over-year unemployment rate decreases in December 2018 with Ames, IA, having the lowest unemployment of 1.4%.
